THE man who drove Durrow’s fire engine for more than 22 years has dashed to his last emergency call. Ger Brophy retired last week on his 58th birthday after nearly 34 years with the Laois fire service.

Unusually, three generations of his family have served as fire-fighters in Durrow. His late father John was a fireman in the late 1940s, when the brigade was still a voluntary service. Ger’s son Justin joined the Durrow station last year, and father and son have worked side by side for the past six months.

Ger joined the Durrow brigade as a fire-fighter in July 1981 and was promoted to driver-mechanic in 1992. Ever since, he has been a familiar figure behind the wheel of the Durrow fire engine.
