MARYBOROUGH advanced to the quarter-finals of the CCFL Shield after a hard fought victory over Arlington.
Arlington started the stronger and took the lead after only two minutes. When a corner kick was not cleared by Maryborough the Arlington player shot from the edge of the box and finished well.
Maryborough slowly made their way into the game and were rewarded after 25 minutes. A clearance by Arlington was blocked by Dan Langan. He played in winger Dom Conroy whose initial shot was blocked but he made no mistake when the rebound fell to him.
The game was finely balanced and whichever team scored next would go on to win. It was the home side, on the hour mark, who took the lead. Sean Hofmeister was fouled 25 yards out. Seamus Lawless stepped up and hit his free kick perfectly leaving the keeper no chance.
Five minutes later Shane Langan was harshly sent off. He was adjudged to have taken down the Arlington player as the last man when there was little to no contact involved.
To Maryborough’s credit they dug deep and held firm through each Arlington attack. With ten minutes left, Maryborough made it 3-1. A counter attack found Hofmeister free. His turn and shot were perfect.
Maryborough stayed resolute at the back and saw out the game. They now look forward to their last eight match.
