THERE was great excitement in Abbeyleix South School, particularly among the pupils of Ms Wallace’s second class, recently with the news that seven-year-old Orla McCorry from Ballyroan may have her doodle displayed to a worldwide audience on the Google internet server.

Asked how she feels about reaching the final stage of the competition, Orla said: “I am so excited that I could burst.”

Orla is the eldest daughter of Mark and Fiona McCorry and has a younger sister, Hannah.

At present, Orla is the only Laois representative in this stage of the annual Google doodle competition.

Asked how she came up with her design, Orla said: “I thought of my doodle in a dream. I love music, that’s where I got my idea. My drawing is called The amazing musician. I designed each letter of the Google word to be a different instrument. My teacher says that the Google part is easy to see, which is important for the design.

I picked the different instruments because they fitted in well with the shape of the letters, the capital G becoming a harp with a harpist playing the strings.

The harpist is the lead musician in my Google band.

Then the two Os are a cello and a tambourine, the small G is a horn, the L is a maraca and the E is another horn. Each letter is coloured differently and I used gel-pens because they make the letters stand out.”

Asked how her school pals feel about her reaching the finals, Orla said: “It’s been really nice. Everybody is very happy for me and they are all voting and getting their families and friends to vote.”

Abbeyleix South National School had another pupil reach this stage of the competition last year.

Ms Wallace said: “We are very much a school that places great emphasis on the visual arts. The school is very proud to have a pupil reach the finals again.”
