THE miserable wet weather did not put the runners off participating in the largest attended Laois Road Novice race which was held in Portarlington on Sunday.

Twelve teams competed in the men’s event and five teams in the ladies.

First up was the women’s 3K which was won by Grace McConnell from Ballyroan Abbeyleix and District with two of Portlaoise AC’s athletes, sisters, Sharon and Paula Grant taking second and third places. The team event was won by Ballyroan Abbeyleix and District with Portlaoise taking silver and St Michael’s bronze.

Next up was the men’s 6K.

This saw a field of 51 athletes and was an exciting battle between Portlaoise and St Michael’s for first, with Portlaoise’s Chris Finn taking the gold and John Fenlon winning silver. Sean Culleton from Portlaoise AC won bronze.

In the men’s teams, Portlaoise A came first, St Michael’s A second and St Abban’s A third.

Well done to all the competitors who participated, and thank you to the hosting club, St Michael’s AC and to all who help out on the day.
