THIS was the second year for the Tony Forrestal event to be held outside of Waterford and the fact that O’Moore Park played host for the second year running is a mark of just have far Laois hurling is improving at grassroots level.
It’s a testament of the great work that is being done by all involved.
The Tony Forrestal is a tournament that is second only to the Féile in U14 competition. There were 15 teams from the four provinces taking part in a 27 game schedule.
As holders of the cup from the previous year, Laois fielded two teams which also demonstrates the work that is being put in at this level.
Both Laois teams acquitted themselves very well with players on both the O’Moores and Laois catching the eye throughout the day.
The O’Moores just came up short against Kerry in the Shield semi final, with Kerry going on to take the title after defeating Down.
The Laois team fared much better but could not retain the crown for the third year running, succumbing to Antrim in the Cup final in O’Moore Park after and epic contest.
Special praise must also go to the Clonad and Portlaoise GAA clubs who provided the venue’s for the matches to take place in.
There will be more juvenile action this weekend when the U10 Laoiskill Day takes place in Portlaoise at Rathleague on Saturday. Events kick off at 10am sharp.
