BALLYROAN ABBEY 2-19 THE ROCK 0-02
In what can only be described as a massacre, Ballyroan Abbey accomplished a twenty-three point victory in O’Moore Park.
It was almost like the Cork senior football team lined up against The Rock U-8s, and as the scoreline would suggest it was completely one-sided. Anytime The Rock gained possession they more or less handed it to Ballyroan with a cherry on top.
If it wasn’t for the high scoring and pure creativeness of Ballyroan, most people would have walked out after fifteen minutes. Really, The Rock should have stayed at home, they probably wouldn’t have lost by as much if they had.
Ballyroan Abbey totally outclassed their opponents from the off. Charles Dwyer scoring with mere seconds elapsed, the corner-forward slipped his marker to split the posts, a warning to The Rock of what was to come. Ballyroan added to their account compliments of Martin Scully and Daniel Bergin, all inside twelve minutes. The Rock hadn’t even got the ball past the Ballyroan sixty yard line.
The worst was to come for The Rock; after three close attempts on goal from Ballyroan. Martin Scully finally ended their goal drought.
Scully was definitely a contender for man-of-the-match, and his goal just proved it, he strolled through the opposing defence and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. Kevin Jones managed to claw one back, but really it was in vain. In the minutes to follow, Ballyroan just kicked points for fun. Nine points in eleven minutes, the sign of a great team or of poor opponents?
Ballyroan showed no signs of letting up in the second half, thirteen minutes into the half and already 1-3 added to the referees scorecard. Whatever hope of a revival the Rock had was well and truly gone.
They managed a point in the last minute of the game, but it was little too late. Ballyroan played keep ball while maintaining the tempo they had set, scoring an additional four points. They breezed through the game virtually unchallenged.
One thing for certain is there won’t be any twenty-three point victories for them when they step up a grade to A football next year.
