Arles Killeen make Park/Ratheniska pay in championship opener

ARLES Killeen got their Laois Shopping Centre Senior Football Championship campaign off to a winning start after producing a clinical display to overcome Park/Ratheniska by five points in Laois Hire O'Moore Park on Saturday evening.

The margin at full-time did not tell the full story of a contest that ebbed and flowed throughout. Park/Ratheniska looked the more accomplished outfit for much of the opening half, dominating possession and dictating the tempo, but their inability to convert that control into scores ultimately proved costly as Arles Killeen punished them with ruthless efficiency.

Arles Killeen could scarcely have made a better start when Ennae Byrne pointed inside 20 seconds after winning the throw-in. However, Park/Ratheniska settled quickly and began to enjoy long spells of possession.

Cian Nolan and Noah Fingleton both found the target within the opening four minutes to edge the 2025 Intermediate champions. The sides were level once more after an excellent flowing move involving Oisin Byrne, Paul Kingston and Colin Dunne ended with Donie Kingston splitting the posts.

Park/Ratheniska's dominance was rewarded in the seventh minute when they struck for the their first goal. Noah Fingleton exchanged passes with Nolan before bursting through on goal and calmly slipping the ball underneath Jason Enright to leave his side deservedly in front. Remarkably, that would prove to be Park/Ratheniska's final score of the opening half.

Despite monopolising possession and spending extended periods inside the Arles Killeen half, they repeatedly came up against a disciplined defence that refused to buckle. Whenever opportunities did arise, Arles Killeen defended superbly, with corner-back Enda O'Rourke producing two outstanding goal-line clearances that proved every bit as valuable as scores at the opposite end.

His first intervention denied Simon Fingleton after a dangerous attack, while moments later he reacted brilliantly to clear Cian Nolan's effort off the line after it had beaten Enright.

Those defensive heroics inspired Arles Killeen at the other end. Colin Dunne, who was hugely influential throughout, kicked two superb points despite limited attacking opportunities. The second arrived after he exchanged passes in a clever one-two before curling over a classy outside-of-the-boot effort to put Arles Killeen back in front.

The game's first major turning point arrived shortly before half-time. Ennae Byrne surged brilliantly down the wing before delivering a perfectly weighted pass across the square, where Donie Kingston was on hand to palm home from close range.

Byrne then rounded off an excellent personal first-half display by adding another point, ensuring Arles Killeen went to the dressing room with a healthy 1-7 to 1-2 advantage despite seeing considerably less of the ball.

Dunne wasted little time extending that lead after the restart, but Park/Ratheniska finally ended a frustrating 27-minute scoring drought when Richie Hitchcock engineered an opening for Nolan, who blasted confidently to the net.

The response from Arles Killeen was immediate. Paul Kingston converted a free before Enda O'Rourke again came to his side's rescue, this time producing a superb block to deny Tom Fingleton.

Conor Headen narrowed the gap with a free after Andrew Wall was penalised for tackling Simon Fingleton within four metres during a solo-and-go, but the Kingston brothers combined brilliantly midway through the second half as Donie picked out Paul for an important point that restored a four-point cushion.

Park/Ratheniska refused to throw in the towel. Simon Fingleton, Cian Nolan and Matt Cunningham all landed points to leave the minimum between the sides entering the closing stages and set up a tense finale.

However, the decisive score arrived in bizarre fashion. Cathal Tierney's kick-out went straight to Paul Kingston, whose ambitious first-time effort sailed over the stranded goalkeeper. The ball struck the crossbar before rebounding off Tierney and into his own net, handing Arles Killeen a slice of fortune at exactly the right time.

Simon Fingleton responded with another point to keep Park/Ratheniska's hopes alive, but Arles Killeen finished the stronger. Ennae Byrne added his third point of the evening before Paul Kingston converted a late free to wrap up a deserved victory and hand manager Paddy Christie the perfect start to his championship campaign.
