Battling North Midlands go down to North East
The North Midlands team which lost out to the North East challenge in their BearingPoint Shane Horgan Cup game

THE BearingPoint Shane Horgan game in Mullingar between the North Midlands and the North East tested the nerves and commitment of both the players and their supporters.
The more physical and heavier pack representing the North East opened with determination and pace scoring an opening try from Andrew Broughton converted by Sean Masterson on four minutes.
The North East returned to the attach and scored again on 10 minutes with Griffin Bermingham and again on 20 minutes with Oisin Mc Carton scoring tries converted by Masterson.
On 25 minutes the North Midlands responded with an excellent break by Daniel Britton Millner evading several tackles with excellent footwork to score wide.
Once again the North East took the ball down the field to score n through a converted try from Asanka Varney leaving the score at 24-5 at the half time break.
The second half saw a much greater commitment from the North Midlands. The ball was moving quickly across the backs with good support from the forwards. A break from Senan Mulqueen released Henry O’Brien to score wide. Ronan Carroll converted.
Again the North Midlands returned to the attack with prop Adam Yates making a big carry out of his 22, releasing Daniel Britton Millner. Good defence stopped Millner, who popped the ball to Henry O’Brien who scored making the score 24-17.
Unfortunately, a lapse in concentration allowed the North East back into the game with a Matt M Evoy try converted by Masterson.
Daniel Britton Millner and teammates were up to the fight. Now carrying the ball at pace across the backs they created space for the fleetfooted back three. Again Millner showed excellent evasion skills to glide over for another try. Now this game was there for the taking.
On this occasion however it was the North East who took advantage of some line-out failures moving into the North Midlands end. Tries from Matt Mc Evoy and Andrew Broughton left the score 38-24.
Again the North Midlands responded with another fast break. Following the NE being penalised for not releasing a quick penalty released Brittan to score his third try on the day.
Unfortunately, the North East came back to score another try by Broughton. The leave the final score 43-29.
The final game for the North Midlands will be in Portlaoise RFC against an unbeaten Midlands side.
