Both Laois teams still in the promotion hunt
Leinster League Division 2B/3 WITH just one round of the first phase of the Leinster League Division 2B/3 left both Portlaoise and Portarlington are very much in the hunt for a place in Division 2A next season.
The regulations for Division 2B/3 state that all 11 teams must initially play each other. At the end of that phase the top five team will play each other once with their points tally carrying through. The table topper will be promoted while the second place team will playoff.
After last weekend’s round of games Roscrea remain top with 44 points after being awarded five points for a bonus point win after Rathnure conceded a walk over.
Portlaoise lie in second place just four points adrift on 40 points after their bonus point win over Garda Westmanstown.
Should Portlaoise get a bonus point win tomorrow (Sunday) and Roscrea lose the Laois team can top the table. But this is where things gets very interesting.
Portarlington sit in third place on 37 points and they play their county neighbours tomorrow. While they cannot overtake Portlaoise to end phase one, they can stop their rivals topping the table.
And as if that was not interesting enough, the pair will meet the following Sunday in the opening round of this season’s Provincial Towns Cup and bot games will be played in Togher.
Three teams are in contention to play in Division 2B proper when the league resumes, Midland Warriors who are currently on 26 points, North Meath on 23 and Garda Westmanstown on 22.
