Vince Zampella, one of the creators behind bestselling video games such as Call of Duty, has died aged 55.

Video game company Electronic Arts, which owns Respawn Entertainment, a game studio Mr Zampella co-founded, said that he died on Sunday.

The Irish Times reports that he died in a single-car accident on the Angeles Crest Highway, which was reported to the California highway patrol at 12.45pm on Sunday. The vehicle’s driver died at the scene, and a passenger died later in hospital.

A spokesperson for Electronic Arts said Mr Zampella’s influence on the video game industry was “profound and far-reaching”.

“A friend, colleague, leader and visionary creator, his work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers around the world,” the statement said. “His legacy will continue to shape how games are made and how players connect for generations to come.”
