Chelmiah continues rapid rise as Arles boxer extends unbeaten start
Eoghan Chelmiah has his hand raised after getting the better of Fernando Joaquin Valdez in Sunderland
ARLES native Eoghan Chelmiah is continuing to build momentum in the professional boxing ranks after producing another assured display to maintain his unbeaten record and strengthen his growing reputation in the sport.
The Laois fighter returned to action earlier this month at the Sunderland Live Arena, where he delivered a polished performance over six rounds to claim a unanimous decision victory over Fernando Joaquin Valdez in a Super Featherweight contest.
Calm, composed and in complete control throughout, Chelmiah showcased the technical ability and ring intelligence that have quickly marked him out as one of the county's most exciting emerging athletes.
Having enjoyed a successful amateur and martial arts career, including reaching the pinnacle of full-contact karate as a world champion, Chelmiah has adapted seamlessly to life in professional boxing. His latest success follows an impressive winning debut during the summer and further underlines his potential in a highly competitive sport.
Against a determined opponent in Sunderland, Chelmiah controlled proceedings from the opening bell. Working effectively behind his jab and picking his moments to attack, he repeatedly found the target with the cleaner and more accurate punches. Over six rounds he dictated the tempo, remained disciplined in his approach and never allowed his opponent to gain a foothold in the contest.
With two victories now secured from his opening professional outings, confidence is growing that the Arles man has all the ingredients required to progress through the ranks in the coming years.
The next chapter in that journey is already on the horizon. Chelmiah is set to return to the ring on November 14 in Alicante, Spain, where he will look to continue his perfect start and add a third professional victory to his record.
His early achievements have generated considerable interest among boxing supporters in Laois, with many keenly following the development of a fighter who has successfully transferred world-class credentials from karate into the boxing arena.
Still in the early stages of his professional career, Chelmiah knows tougher tests lie ahead. However, the signs so far have been extremely encouraging, and another convincing performance in Alicante would further enhance his status as one of the county's brightest sporting prospects.
For now, the unbeaten run remains intact and the upward trajectory continues, with Arles and the wider Laois sporting community eagerly awaiting his next appearance between the ropes.
