Laois Hurlers' Golf Society's Golfer of the Year, Matthew Keegan, being presented with the Ollie Fennell Trophy

THE Laois Hurlers Golfing Society descended on the Heath Golf Club for their annual end of season outing. As usual, the hosts offered a warm welcome and presented the golf course in excellent condition. It proved a challenging day, strong winds a constant presence which tested the players resolve as much as the golf course.

They say golf is a game of precision and patience and Dominic Connell certainly demonstrated those attributes in shooting a wonderful score of 38 points to take home the main prize.

A very competitive battle ensued for the remaining places. Society Captain Philip Monnelly just edged out Paul Delaney, while Matthew Keegan claimed fourth spot. Cathal O’Donnell, with a tremendous drive down the 13th, took home the Longest Drive prize, while John Taylor beat all comers to clinch the Nearest the Pin title.

Within the Society, the most sought-after prize is the Ollie Fennell Trophy, in honour of the Leinster, Laois and Clonad legend, who was a long-time member and supporter of the Society. The trophy is awarded to the golfer who has performed consistently well over all the Society’s’ outings throughout the year. This year, the coveted award was won by the former Portlaoise and Laois star, Matthew Keegan. A worthy winner.

As the curtain closes on another season, the Society would like to say a huge thanks to Philip Monnelly for being a wonderful committed Captain of the Society; and to all the players, young and old, who participated.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next year.
