Gaelscoil Phortlaoise 5-2

Holy Family 2-4

GAELSCOIL Phortlaoise were crowned Division 7 Shield champions following a strong victory over Holy Family in an all-Portlaoise decider at O’Moore Park.

Goals proved crucial throughout the contest, with Gaelscoil making the most of their chances in front of goal to secure the title.

Holy Family made the brighter start and took an early lead thanks to Sean Daly, who finished brilliantly after an impressive solo run.

Gaelscoil responded in style when MJ O Raghallaigh struck from distance and saw his effort find the back of the net.

Daly added a point soon after and came close to another major score, only to see his shot rebound off the post. Holy Family were then left frustrated when a goal from Ruairi Bannon was disallowed after he was deemed to have overcarried before finishing.

Gaelscoil took full advantage of that setback, with captain Alex O Fiachra powering home two excellent goals after surging runs forward. A point from Donal Mac Tomais Duibhir helped his side into a 3-1 to 1-1 lead by the interval.

Gaelscoil extended their advantage early in the second half when substitute Liam Mac Giolla Bhride netted their fourth goal, before Donal Mac Tomais Duibhir added another point.

Holy Family battled back through two scores from Ruairi Bannon, while Sean Daly converted a free before firing home a superb goal to leave just four points between the teams.

Daly looked to have brought Holy Family right back into contention with another finish to the net, but the score was ruled out after he was judged to have kicked the sliotar.

That proved a turning point as Gaelscoil quickly regained control, with Lorcan O Briain striking their fifth goal to put the result beyond doubt and seal Division 7 Shield honours.
