Goal rush seals Roinn 1 Shield success for Holy Family

HOLY Family SS emerged victorious after a strong win over Rathdowney in the division one hurling shield on Thursday afternoon.

The Portlaoise school set the tempo from the get-go as they took off on a scoring spree pointing five in a row. Tom Delaney pointed the opening score from a free while Ronan O’Gorman followed adding four on the trot.

A goal shot from David Bowe was superbly blocked by Aaron Scully while only moments later a goal from JP Ryan was disallowed as he had kicked the ball across the line. O’Gorman scored his fifth point while Sean Lalor raised the first green flag.

Sam Dunne scored a fantastic goal over his right shoulder and Bowe pointed Rathdowney’s first score from a free while in the next passage of play, he fired in their first goal. Jake Dunne scored his sides third goal to give them a lead of 3-6 to 1-1 at halftime.

Dunne fired in the first goal of the second half while Bowe replied immediately in the same manner. Delaney pointed a 45’ before Bowe had another goal chance but Niall McNamara denied him. Lalor added a further 1-1 to his tally and O’Gorman pointed a sixth.

Captain Tom Devaney got in on the scoring act and fired to the back of the net with Dunne and Oran Byrne raising white flags. Callum Williamson brough fresh legs and immediately pointed for Holy Family and only minutes later secured their seventh goal. A free from Cian O’Keefe brough the game to a close and saw them raise the division one shield much to the delight of their large travelling supporters.
