THE Laois Hurlers Golfing Society brought the curtain down on another successful season in style at Mountrath Golf Club on Saturday 26 September with a large turnout enjoying both excellent golf and the opportunity to renew friendships forged across many years of involvement in the game.

Played in ideal conditions, the season-ending outing produced a tightly-contested leaderboard, with strong scoring throughout the field and only a handful of points separating the leading competitors.

When the cards were counted, it was Castletown's Fionan O'Sullivan who emerged at the head of the standings with an outstanding haul of 44 points. Fint Scully finished close behind in second place, while Cyril Cuddy secured third spot and Tommy Moore completed the top four places after another competitive day's golf.

The special prize categories also attracted plenty of attention. John G. Conroy produced a towering drive down the 18th fairway to claim the Longest Drive competition, while Dominic Connell demonstrated his precision on the challenging par-three 10th hole to secure the Nearest the Pin award.

While the day winners received deserved recognition, the highlight of the presentation was the awarding of the Ollie Fennell Memorial Trophy, widely regarded as the most treasured prize within the Society.

Presented in memory of the late Ollie Fennell, one of Laois hurling's most celebrated figures and a long-time supporter of the Golfing Society, the trophy honours consistency and commitment across the entire season rather than success on a single day.

This year's recipient was former Portlaoise and Laois hurler Joe Keenan, whose performances throughout the campaign saw him finish at the top of a highly competitive overall standings.

Keenan's victory was warmly received by fellow members and recognised a season of sustained excellence. Speaking following the presentation, he expressed his delight at capturing a trophy that holds such special significance for everyone involved with the Society.

The conclusion of the season also provided an opportunity to acknowledge those who contributed to another successful year. Special tribute was paid to captain Frank Scott for his dedication, enthusiasm and leadership throughout the campaign, while appreciation was also extended to all members whose support and participation ensured the continued success of the Society.

With another memorable year now complete, attention will soon turn to next season, when the Society will once again bring together the rich traditions of Laois hurling and golf in a spirit of friendship, competition and camaraderie.
