Killeshin dare to dream as champions stand in their way

EVERY championship produces a story, and Killeshin have become one of the stories of the 2026 Laois Senior Football Championship.

Standing between them and a second ever senior final appearance [losing 0-14 to 2-7 to Portlaoise in 2019].are the county's dominant force of recent years. Portarlington arrive at Laois Hire O'Moore Park chasing a third consecutive championship title and carrying all the experience that comes with being champions. Killeshin arrive with something different: momentum, belief and the confidence that comes from already toppling two of the county's most established clubs.

Portarlington have looked every inch a side determined to defend their crown. Victories over The Heath and Stradbally saw them safely negotiate the opening stages before a difficult quarter-final assignment against neighbours O'Dempsey's.

As champions so often do, they found a way. O'Dempsey's pushed them hard but Portarlington's quality eventually shone through in a 1-14 to 1-9 victory.

The challenge facing Killeshin is obvious. Portarlington know these occasions better than any team in the county. They have vast experience throughout their panel and understand exactly what is required when the stakes are highest.

Yet Killeshin have shown throughout this campaign that they are not interested in following the script.

An opening-round defeat to Stradbally could easily have derailed their season. Instead, it proved to be the catalyst for an impressive response. They bounced back with victory over Rosenallis before producing a landmark result against neighbours Graiguecullen.

That 0-21 to 1-14 success represented far more than qualification for the knockout stages. It was Killeshin's first ever senior championship win over neighbours Graiguecullen and a result that signalled they were capable of achieving something special.

If anyone thought the breakthrough was merely a one-off, Killeshin quickly dispelled that notion in the quarter-final. Having fallen behind early against Portlaoise, they regrouped superbly and delivered one of the shocks of the championship, emerging 0-13 to 1-8 winners.

Back-to-back victories over Graiguecullen and Portlaoise have transformed expectations and ensured that today's semi-final will be approached with excitement rather than fear.

For Portarlington, the objective is straightforward. Another win moves them within touching distance of a third successive county title and reinforces their position as the team everyone else is trying to catch.

For Killeshin, the opportunity is perhaps even greater. Already they have rewritten sections of their club's history this season. One more victory would earn them a shot at a first senior football title.
