Knockout stakes and semi-final ambitions as Group B reaches boiling point

THE final round of the PIHC group stage takes centre stage on Saturday, with plenty still to be decided in Group B. Rathdowney/Errill and Colt-Shanahoe meet in a must-win clash, while Castletown and Clough/Ballacolla battle for top spot and a direct route to the semi-finals.
Colt-Shanahoe v Rathdowney/Errill There is no shortage of pressure on Colt-Shanahoe coming into this contest. Consecutive defeats to Clough/Ballacolla and Castletown have left them fighting to avoid the relegation play-off, with Saturday's game effectively a survival shootout.
Despite those losses, Colt-Shanahoe have shown enough to suggest they are capable of causing problems. James Keyes has been their standout performer, hitting five points from play against Castletown, while Ben McDonald's goal threat remains a major weapon.
Rathdowney/Errill, meanwhile, find themselves in a slightly unusual position. Traditionally among the county's strongest hurling clubs, they have lost their opening two games in this competition, most recently surrendering a half-time lead before falling to Clough/Ballacolla. Aaron Costigan, Paddy Hassett and Jordan Kavanagh were among their leading performers that day and will be central to their hopes of getting over the line.
The experience and scoring power of Rathdowney/Errill make them favourites, but Colt-Shanahoe know exactly what is at stake and should bring huge intensity. Expect a fierce, physical encounter where composure in front of goal could prove decisive.
Castletown v Clough/Ballacolla This is undoubtedly the tie of the round.
Castletown have looked every inch championship contenders so far, winning both of their opening games and recording an emphatic 2-23 to 2-10 victory over Colt-Shanahoe in Round 2. Their attacking unit has been firing on all cylinders, with Tom Óg Phelan, Conor Phelan, Kyron Cuddy and Conor Walsh all making significant contributions.
Clough/Ballacolla arrive with momentum of their own. After edging Colt-Shanahoe in Round 1, they produced an impressive second-half display to defeat Rathdowney/Errill by nine points in Round 2. John Dwyer's two goals proved crucial, while Padraigh Brennan, Kevin Hyland, Gary Whelan and John Coonan all played leading roles.
With both teams unbeaten, top spot is on the line and neither side will want to surrender the initiative heading into the knockout stages. Castletown's pace and scoring depth have been hugely impressive, but Clough/Ballacolla have shown a ruthless streak and the ability to finish games strongly.
This has all the ingredients of a championship classic between two teams who look capable of going all the way.
