Former soldier Lisa Smith’s conviction for membership of Islamic State is “sound” and should be upheld, the State has told the Court of Appeal

Lisa Smith is appealing against her conviction for being a member of the so-called Islamic State terror group.

Smith, from Dundalk in Co Louth, is outlining her case against her conviction for being a member of so-called Islamic State at the Court of Appeal.

Lisa Smith’s legal team is expected to argue that she travelled to Syria in 2015 for religions reasons.

In 2022, Smith became the first person to be convicted in an Irish court of an Islamic terrorist offence committed abroad
