LYIA Miller produced one of the most remarkable individual displays seen in O'Moore Park as Knock NS claimed the Division 3 title following an enthralling victory over Ballinakill in an 18-goal classic on Thursday.
The Knock forward was simply unstoppable, finishing with an incredible ten goals as her side survived a fierce Ballinakill challenge in a contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
Knock raced out of the blocks with Miller finding the net twice in the opening stages. Ballinakill responded impressively, however, as Ciara Dowling and Isabel Doyle both raised green flags to bring their side right back into contention.
Miller continued to torment the Ballinakill defence, adding two more goals before the interval, but Ballinakill refused to go away. Inspired by the excellent Meabh Kearney, who registered 1-1 before the break, they remained firmly in touch as Knock held a slender 4-0 to 3-1 advantage at half-time.
The second half was every bit as dramatic. Miller completed her fifth goal shortly after the restart, but Kearney replied with two goals of her own to put Ballinakill in front by a point. When Emily Lawlor followed up with another goal, Ballinakill looked to have seized the initiative.
Yet Knock always had Miller. The prolific forward struck twice more to restore her side's lead and leave the scoreboard reading 7-0 to 6-1 entering the closing stages.
Another Miller goal extended Knock's advantage before Margaret Butler became the first of her teammates to trouble the scorers, landing the side's only point of the contest. Doireann Dwyer responded with a goal for Ballinakill, while Lawlor added a point to keep the pressure on.
Ballinakill continued to push for a late equaliser, but Knock goalkeeper Orlaith Headen proved a match-winner in her own right, producing a series of outstanding saves when her side needed them most.
Fittingly, the final word belonged to Miller, who completed her astonishing tally of ten goals before the final whistle sounded, sealing a memorable victory and the Division 3 crown for Knock NS.
