THE Mountmellick Community School Girls Junior rugby team delivered an outstanding performance on Wednesday 19 November to be crowned the champions of the North Midlands 7s Cup.
Displaying speed, fitness, and exceptional teamwork across the competition, the girls navigated a tough field to secure the title.
7s rugby requires intense concentration and athleticism, and the Mountmellick squad showed they possessed both in abundance. Their tournament run was marked by consistently high energy and devastating attacking play.
The day began with a closely contested match against Newbridge CS. The physical nature of the game meant scores were hard-earned, and the match concluded in a well-fought draw, proving the mental strength of the Mountmellick side right from the outset.
The second fixture saw the girls find their lethal attacking rhythm against Heywood. The team controlled possession and space effectively, resulting in a dominant victory with a 15-point winning margin. This performance cemented their place as a top contender in the competition.

In the crucial final match against Blessington CS, the team peaked, putting on a spectacular display of fast-paced rugby. Their defence remained watertight while their offense was clinical, resulting in a resounding win by a massive 25-point margin to claim the Cup.
The success is a testament to the dedication of the players and the expert guidance of their coaching team, Ms. Brophy and Mr. Byrne.
The team now looks forward to building on this success as they prepare for the Leinster 7s Tournament at Donnybrook Stadium on Tuesday 2 December, carrying the momentum of their North Midlands 7s Cup victory.
