Company engaged to assess Abbeyleix traffic lights

FOLLOWING months and years of persistent traffic lights problems, Laois Co Council has engaged the services of a specialist to resolve the Abbeyeix lights problem.
At the latest meeting of Portlaoise municipal district, councillor John Joe Fennelly requested the council replace the signal control systems that control one of the junctions in Abbeyleix. He described the problems with the lights as an issue that stretched back years.
The primary issues that are causing frustration with members of the public is that the lights, reportedly, take an “eternity” to change for motorists travelling in either direction, alongside the fact that several pedestrians have found that the button for crossing the road only works intermittently and rarely at that.
Cllr Barry Walsh seconded the motion and highlighted that he even made a point of going around that area of Abbeyleix to avoid the faulty traffic lights, taking a short cut through Rathmoyle instead – a move that was a common dodge availed of by many members of the public.
A situation where motorists were forced to avoid main road infrastructure was not one which could be allowed to continue, he believes.
In response, a representative of Laois Co Council confirmed that a specialist traffic lights company had been engaged to carry out a full review of the lights, highlighting that they will have the result of the assessment in a few weeks at the latest.
