Council requested to install Age Friendly parking space at Stradbally library

Stradbally Library is located in the local Arthouse premises

STRADBALLY library should be considered for the installation of a dedicated Age Friendly parking space, the latest meeting of Portarlington/Graiguecullen municipal district heard.

The motion was brought to the meeting by Cllr Vivienne Phelan, who received this response from a representative of the area office: "Laois Co Council will carry out an assessment of this location to determine the merits of this request and will advise Cllr Phelan of an update when this is completed."

In making the case to her fellow councillors, Cllr Phelan said that the request had been put to her by several different people in Stradbally and by many families of older people living in the area who either regularly availed of the library’s standard services or by those going to attend regular events hosted in the library.

Cllr Phelan said: "And, you know, sometimes it can happen. It's quite congested down there with the parking and it then can be quite a walk for some people and a bit much for older people. And we have invested quite a bit in the library services and there is a great team in the library services and it would be great if everybody could have the opportunity to avail of that as easily as possible, which, I suppose, is where I am coming from with them."

One of the councillors who supported her motion agreed that a car parking space specifically earmarked for older people would be especially suited to the library, given the fact that those most likely to regularly attend Stradbally library are older people.
