A BARRISTER said the reason his client was detected driving at 192kph was that the speedometer in her car was in miles and read 120mph at the time.
Outlining the facts in the case, Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told Judge Susan Fay at Portlaoise District Court that, on 3 August along the M7 in Mellick, gardaí detected a silver Mercedes travelling at a speed of 192kph in a 120kph zone.
David Nugent BL said the defendant, self-employed beauty therapist Chelsea Casey from Sarsfield Court, Saint John’s, Garryowen, Limerick was pleading guilty to the offence of dangerous driving.
He said his 27-year-old client had purchased the car three weeks earlier and the speedometer at the time was in miles, which has since been changed to kilometres.
Mr Nugent said that, if disqualified from driving, Ms Casey would have to sign on the dole as she worked as a mobile beauty therapist, or she would have to get a job within walking distance in her locality.
Judge Fay convicted Ms Casey of dangerous driving, fined her €250 and disqualified her from driving for two years.
