Laois man (33) assaulted his brother-in-law in pub
A MAN who was found guilty of assaulting his brother-in-law in a pub in Carlow town was spared a conviction when he appeared before the local district court last Wednesday.
Robert Moran, with an address at Killeshin, Co Laois was found guilty of assault arising from an incident that occurred in Dinn Rí, Tullow Street, Carlow on 26 March 2023.
Evidence of the case was heard at an earlier court sitting and 33-year-old Mr Moran was before Judge Geraldine Carthy last week for finalisation of the matter.
She recalled some of the details of the incident, saying that CCTV footage showed Mr Moran approaching his in-law with a headbutting action before hitting him.
She said that she had “no doubt” that the defendant was guilty as charged.
She also noted that Mr Moran had been offered an adult caution but that his in-law objected to that because it wasn’t the first incident between the two men.
She added that both men were intoxicated at the time and that it was not Mr Moran’s “finest hour”.
Judge Carthy then said she didn’t deem it appropriate for Mr Moran to walk out of the court with a criminal conviction and instead gave him the opportunity to make a €2,000 contribution to the court poor box.
