A GRAIGUECULLEN man was last week ordered in Carlow District Court to carry out community service after he got “very agitated” when he was approached by a member of An Garda Síochána in a supermarket. Ruben Obadia, 5 Brotherton, Sleaty Road, Graiguecullen pleaded guilty to engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour, and refusing to give his name to the gardaí during an incident that occurred in the Aldi supermarket, Graiguecullen on 29 July 2023.

Sergeant Hud Kelly told the court that a garda approached Mr Obadia in the supermarket and that he became agitated, saying “no comment” and “f**k you” to the garda.

Solicitor Alex Rafter said that 52-year-old Mr Obadia was very apologetic for his behaviour and that he got upset because his brother is well known to gardaí and he felt he was being “singled out” by them.

Judge Geraldine Carthy ordered the defendant to carry out 180 hours of community service in lieu of two months in prison.
