A Laois man was fined €1,000 for parking in a disabled parking bay without displaying a disabled parking permit.

Edward Kelly, Garryvacum, Ballybrittas had been summoned before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court to answer to the offence.

Mr Kelly was not present in court when his case was called.

Judge Andrew Gubbins said that he was satisfied that the summons was served correctly and proceeded to hear the case.

Garda Hough said that on 14 March while on patrol on Main Street, Portarlington, she spotted a car parked in the disabled parking space outside the local bank. She said there was no disabled parking disc displayed on the car.

She said that Mr Kelly has previous road traffic convictions.

Judge Gubbins said: “He’s not present. He has previous convictions, one for having no insurance and now he has a conviction for parking in a disabled parking bay.” He went on to convict Mr Kelly of the offence and fined him €1,000.
