A LAOIS man who found a wallet containing more than €600 after it was left behind at a local petrol station was given until November to repay the full amount when he appeared before Portlaoise District Court last week.
Evidence was given by Garda Sgt Kirby that on 7 April last year at 3pm, a 74-year-old man left his wallet containing €605 on a pump at the Gala filling station on Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise.
The defendant pulled his van in as the injured party left and took the wallet.
He said gardaí viewed CCTV footage from the filling station and from that identified the man who had taken the wallet.
Gerard McInerney (48), Shannon Road, Mountrath pleaded guilty to theft.
“It was a very stupid, spur of the moment thing,” said Mr McInerney’s solicitor Philip Meagher.
He said his client had brought €300 with him to court and, if given additional time, would be able to raise the remaining balance of €305.
Judge Andrew Gubbins adjourned the case to 16 November and instructed Mr McInerney to have the balance in court on that date.
