A WOMAN who drove her husband’s car after a family member had tipped a car door off another car in a shopping centre car park appeared at Portlaoise District Court on a motoring offence.

Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said that at 11.30am on 4 July last year, gardaí received a report of a two-car road traffic accident in the car park of the Kyle centre in Portlaoise.

When gardaí arrived at the scene, the defendant failed to provide a driving licence to them.

He said Anna Hickey (61), Brockey Park, Stradbally had no previous convictions.

She pleaded guilty to not having a driving licence at the time.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that Ms Hickey’s full driving licence had expired some years ago and that her husband, who had gone into the shops, had been driving the family car that morning. One of Ms Hickey’s family members had opened the car door and it tipped off another car that was parked alongside it.

Ms Fitzpatrick said that her client decided to drive the car to another parking space as she was concerned what the other driver might do or say about the incident.

Judge Susan Fay convicted Ms Hickey of driving without a driving licence and fined her €300.
