A WOMAN whose former partner bought her a car insisting she drive him around in it appeared before Portlaoise District Court last week on road traffic offences.
The court heard that the vehicle had been purchased by her former partner for that purpose, but the woman later found herself facing prosecution arising from her use of the car. The case came before the court by way of summons.
Garda Sgt Kirby said the driver was stopped on two occasions in nine days and found in both instances to be an unaccompanied learner driver and driving without L plates displayed.
The first incident took place as she drove out of St Brigid’s Place, Portlaoise on 22 February, the second while she was driving out of O’Moore Place, Portlaoise on 3 March.
Sgt Kirby said that the defendant has no previous convictions.
Vanessa Lawless (22), Rosevale, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise pleaded guilty to the offences.
Her solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick that Ms Lawless’ “former partner had bought her the car and insisted that she drive him from place to place in it. She is no longer in that relationship and reassigned the car back to him. She is entering an early plea to the offences to get as much credit from the court as she can for doing so.” Judge Andrew Cody convicted the defendant on all four offences and fined her €100 on each.
