WHEN gardaí arrived to a call out at Portlaoise hospital, they met a man who was highly intoxicated and abusive and who told them to “f**k off” and “go catch real criminals”.
Arising from the incident, the case against John Dervin, Room 1 Holyhead Hostel, Gardiner Street, Dublin came before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court, where he was charged with being intoxicated and engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at the hospital on 23 May.
Sergeant JJ Kirby said that the incident happened at 5.20pm that evening and that Mr Dervin had four previous convictions.
Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client was unable to attend court as he was currently in hospital but was pleading guilty to both charges.
Judge Susan Fay convicted Mr Dervin of engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour and fined him €200. She took the other charge into consideration.
