TWO men charged in connection with the theft of €100,000 during a burglary from a Laois home were remanded in custody when they appeared before Portlaoise District Court last week Roman Lakatos (56) and Roman Lavu (22), both from 47 Sean Doire, Durrow, are accused of the offence that allegedly took place on 11 November last year.

Defending solicitor for both defendants Josphine Fitzpatrick said that an application is to be made to the High Court seeking bail for Mr Lavu.

Garda Sgt Hughes said that he had no directions from the director of public prosecutions (DPP) yet on how the cases are to proceed and asked for a further remand to allow time to receive directions.

Ms Fitzpatrick asked whether the file is ready to be sent to the DPP and when is it expected to be sent? She reminded Sgt Hughes that the state has a certain amount of time in which to send the file to the DPP.

Judge Andrew Gubbins remanded both men in custody to appear again at Portlaoise District Court via video link on 12 October.

He added that if Mr Lavu was successful in his High Court application to secure bail and was released from custody, he must present himself in person in court on 12 October.

Reporting restrictions had previously been imposed preventing the publication of the exact location of the alleged offence.
