A DARK but busy Laois road has “about ten poles but only one light” according to a local councillor.

Cllr James Kelly made the remark in county hall, as he asked for more public lighting to enhance road safety outside Camross GAA Club in Derrynaseera.

He said: “It’s a very, very busy area with the GAA club and there’s a busy crossroads further up that road. There are about 10 poles there – eircom poles and all types of poles – but only one street light.”

He stressed that the club is becoming increasingly busy, with the addition of a new ball wall and a concrete surround for parking around the pitch.

Cllr Kelly added that the sole street light at the entrance to the GAA club had “no effect” anyway, because it was covered by a tree. He hoped that overgrown branches would be removed.

The Independent councillor from Mountrath recalled that two street lights were originally to be installed on the road, as he proposed that Laois Co Council install more public lighting in the interest of safety.

In a written response, an official confirmed that the council’s roads department is ‘assessing the public lighting needs for the area’, following an on-site meeting with Cllr Kelly.

The problem was highlighted at the June meeting of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District.
