Dismay at vandalism in Laois beauty spot

VANDALISM at a popular Laois beauty spot has caused dismay for visitors and for volunteers who look after the scenic site.
A large information board at Derryounce Experience near Portarlington was defaced with graffiti this weekend.
The information board welcoming and guiding visitors to Derryounce Lakes and Trails is covered in ugly scrawls, following the latest outbreak of mindless vandalism.
Similar graffiti is scrawled on a circular bench at the People’s Park in Portarlington, which was installed during the recent major refurbishment of the park.
Posting an image on social media today, Derryounce Experience commented, ‘This is disappointing.’
The scenic 280-hectare site is managed by Portarlington Community Development Association (PCDA), with amenities that include walking trails, a sandy bog beach and two lakes used for angling and recreation.
The beauty spot is managed entirely by volunteers through the PCDA, a registered charity that leases and maintains the area with the help of government funding and community support.
The latest outbreak of vandalism brought anger and dismay among Derryounce Experience followers on social media, with one commenting: ‘There’s a donation available to keep Derryounce maintained and it’s a magnificent area. So sad that this is happening.’
