Double yellow lines to be installed near doctor’s surgery in Portlaoise

PARKING along the roadside entrance into Clonminham Road from the Abbeyleix Road is to be prevented after Laois County Council agreed to make arrangement to install double yellow lines in the area.

The busy entrance junction is used by residents from the Clonminham Estate and Marian Avenue. With a busy GP surgery located near the junction and no off street parking motorists park up along the roadside, which at times causes congestion and delays.

Following a motion from cllr Tommy Mulligan calling on the council to install double yellow lines near the junction, arrangements will be made to install them to prevent parking at all times.

That was the response given to cllr Mulligan at the April meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District Council.

Cllr Mulligan said: “Residents in the Clonminham Estate and Marian Avenue are having major difficulties getting onto the Abbeyleix road and back onto the Clonminham Road. The problem is that cars are parked along the Clonminham Road right out onto the corner of the Abbeyleix Road and clogging up the road entrance. It’s a road safety issue because the views of motorists trying to get out onto the Abbeyleix Road are being obstructed by the parked cars.” 

He said: “I’m aware that there’s a doctor’s clinic there and people have to park somewhere, but all I’m looking for is a stretch of double yellow lines of about 15 metres in length.” 

“It is dangerous there at the junction,” said cllr Catherine Fitzgerald.
