Driver on drug cocktail arrested at Laois 'joint' checkpoint

A MERCEDES driver on a cocktail of drugs was arrested at a joint checkpoint in Laois yesterday.
The motorist tested positive for cocaine, opiates and cannabis during a routine roadside drug test.
The car was stopped at a checkpoint operated jointly by the Laois Roads Policing Unit and the Road Safety Authority.
In a social media post titled ‘Joint Checkpoint – Joint Results’, gardaí said the white Mercedes-Benz was stopped for a routine inspection.
The post by An Garda Síochána Laois Offaly said: ‘A roadside drug test was carried out. The result was clear and concerning … Yet another driver under the influence of cannabis, cocaine and opiates. Not one. Not a trace. A combination.’
The driver was arrested at the scene and the Mercedes was taken off the road.
Court proceedings have commenced and the driver will make an upcoming appearance at Portlaoise District Court.
The incident is the latest in a series of arrests for drug driving in Laois over the past week, including a motorist who tested positive for cocaine twice within five days.
