A FAMOUS Laois pub that closed down suddenly for urgent repairs is set to reopen next week.

Centuries-old Morrissey’s pub in Abbeyleix had to lock the front doors on 9 October, after structural defects emerged during renovations.

With full repairs completed, the beloved 250-year-old pub on Main Street will reopen on Wednesday 12 November. And in even better news, preparations are already in full swing for a big 250th birthday celebration on Saturday 22 November.

Opened in 1775, the pub is renowned not only locally and nationally but internationally for its authentic traditional frontage and interior, which have remained unchanged for generations.

Announcing the good news on social media today, the Morrissey’s team said: ‘After a lot of hard work from the incredible team of professionals and builders, we are delighted to let everyone know that we will be back in action on Wednesday 12 November.

‘She’s finally back up on her feet and ready to shine, just in time for our 250th birthday and the festive season ahead.

‘A huge thank you to everyone for your patience and support over the past few weeks – it truly means the world to us. We can’t wait to welcome you all back in for a pint, a coffee and, most importantly, a good chat. We have got a lot to catch up on …’

When the premises unexpectedly closed, Mark Deegan, one of the pub managers, said that while the closure was disappointing it could be “a blessing in disguise”, as the discovery of structural problems during renovations possibly prevented more serious issues in future.

Mark told the Laois Nationalist: “Time has taken its toll on the building but we’re glad that these issues will be fully dealt with now. We had hoped to keep trading and it was a little bit unexpected to have to close, but we’re happy that all necessary repairs in the old part of the building will be done.”

Structural deterioration in the historic venue, which dates back to the foundation of Abbeyleix, was uncovered during works linking a new rear extension to the older part of the property, as part of an ongoing renovation and expansion project.

When the works are complete, Morrissey’s will include a new restaurant, an outdoor beer garden and 10 guest bedrooms, nine above the pub and one on the ground floor.
