A FAMOUS Laois pub will be closed for weeks, while essential repairs are carried out at the landmark premises.

The team at Morrissey’s pub in Abbeyleix sadly closed the front doors yesterday, saying that the beautiful building was ‘unfortunately a little sicker than we first thought or hoped’.

Structural defects emerged during renovations at the 250-year-old pub on Main Street, which will see the addition of a new restaurant, beer garden and guest accommodation.

The setback means that the premises must close for at least two weeks and possibly longer, while full repairs are carried out.

Opened in 1775, the pub is renowned not only locally and nationally but internationally for its authentic traditional frontage and interior, which have remained unchanged for generations.

Mark Deegan, one of the pub managers, said that while the unexpected closure was disappointing it could be “a blessing in disguise”, as the discovery of structural problems during renovations possibly prevented more serious issues in future.

He said: “Time has taken its toll on the building but we’re glad that these issues will be fully dealt with now. We had hoped to keep trading and it was a little bit unexpected to have to close, but we’re happy that all necessary repairs in the old part of the building will be done.”

Mark said that the pub is definitely closed for two weeks from 9 October. After that, a reopening date will depend on the findings of professional contractors carrying out repair and restoration work.

It is hoped that the popular pub will reopen in time for its legendary Halloween fancy dress night planned for Saturday 1 November. Preparations are also in full swing for a big 250th birthday celebration on Saturday 22 November.

Structural deterioration in the historic building was uncovered during works linking a new rear extension to the older part of the property, as part of an ongoing renovation and expansion project.

When the works are complete, Morrissey’s will include a new restaurant, an outdoor beer garden and 10 guest bedrooms, nine above the pub and one on the ground floor.

In an official message to customers, the Morrissey’s team said: ‘Our beautiful 250-year-old building is, unfortunately, a little sicker than we first thought or hoped.

‘Until we can get her back on her feet, we need to step aside and let the professionals work their magic. They will need a few weeks to mend her and restore her to her former glory.’

The team added: ‘In the meantime, we ask for your patience and understanding while we get these issues resolved. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.’
