ONE of the oldest stores in the heart of Portlaoise is to close its doors, after nearly a century in business.
The iconic red door of Alo Donegan & Sons on Market Square will sadly shut, after 97 long years in the same premises.
The independent family-run store is legendary for all kinds of electrical devices and electronics, repairs, outdoor equipment and probably an endless stock of needles and anchors too.
Founded by renowned sportsman Alo Donegan in 1929, the shop was taken over in the 1960s by his son Eamonn, who continues to run the store today with his son, Kevin.
Announcing the sad news on social media today, the family said: ‘After 97 years trading on the Market Square, we are sadly closing our doors.
‘We would like to express gratitude to all of our customers over the years. Lots of great memories but the time has come to wind it down over the next couple of months.
‘So we’d love to invite all of our loyal customers to come in for one final purchase.’
