LARGE quantities of fireworks were seized by gardaí during patrols of Portlaoise on Halloween night.
Gardaí said the fireworks were confiscated from youths during separate incidents at housing estates in the town.
The bangers were seized in the Kilminchy and Clonrooske areas as part of Operation Tombola, which targets the use of illegal fireworks.
Gardaí were on routine patrols in Portlaoise when they seized what they describe as ‘a considerable quantity of fireworks’ from a number of youths.
Posting images on social media today, gardaí said: ‘As part of Operation Tombola, gardaí on routine patrol in Portlaoise seized a considerable quantity of fireworks from a number of youths, in separate incidents in the Kilminchy and Clonrooske areas.’
Gardaí warned: ‘Fireworks are illegal to possess or use without a licence and every year people suffer life-changing injuries because of them. They can also cause significant distress to older people, pets and livestock.
‘Parents and guardians are again asked to know where your children are, speak to them about the dangers of fireworks and remind them that they’re not harmless fun — they’re explosives.
‘Our patrols will continue throughout the coming days as part of Operation Tombola to help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.
‘If you witness fireworks being used or sold illegally, please contact your local Garda Station.'
