A NEW Historical Society in Laois will hold its first meeting tonight, focusing on three areas with an exceptionally rich heritage.

The St Columbanus Historical Society, celebrating the history of Abbeyleix, Ballinakill and Ballyroan, will hold its inaugural meeting at 7pm on Thursday 15 January.

The public meeting will be held in St Columbanus Hall, Abbeyleix, with parking available in the adjacent parish church car park. The new society welcomes anyone interested in the three communities’ shared heritage.

In a social media notice, the group said: ‘In 2026, we’re bringing our three communities together to form a brand new Historical Society - an open, welcoming group for anyone with an interest in local stories, old photographs, family histories, archaeology, heritage buildings, or simply a love of where we come from.

‘Thanks to the Abbeyleix Men’s Shed, we already have a home in St Columbanus Hall, complete with a warm kettle and a warm welcome. This new society will be open to everyone, men and women from all three areas, working together to research, explore, preserve and celebrate the rich history of our towns and villages.

‘If you’d like to learn more, help shape the committee, or be part of something meaningful for 2026 and beyond, we’d love to hear from you. Our past is full of stories worth keeping - let’s gather them together.’ The group will select a committee and hold regular meetings throughout the year.

Co-founder and local historian Noel Burke said: ‘We’re building something that will last. A place where stories are preserved, artefacts are protected and our heritage is celebrated for generations to come.

‘This is a gathering for anyone who cares about our shared past — from the Brigidines to the old schools, from townlands to traditions, from family stories to forgotten landmarks. Whether you’re from Abbeyleix, Ballyroan or Ballinakill, your voice and your memories matter.’
