GAELSCOIL Phortlaoise is proudly flying the Travel Green Flag, which was raised at a joyful celebration on Thursday 8 October.

The two eldest and two youngest children in the school raised the prestigious flag, as the school community gathered in the yard to celebrate the momentous occasion. Students and their teachers sang the school’s official song ‘Gaelscoil Phortlaoise’ as well as ‘Amhrán na bhFiann.

Children, teachers and SNAs enjoyed a concert with local band ‘The Crooked Jacks’ followed by a party in the classrooms afterwards, with traditional songs such as ‘The Black Velvet Band’ and ‘I’ll Tell Me Ma’.

As part of the school’s green efforts, Gaelscoil Phortlaoise joined forces on a project with nine other schools in Portlaoise. The main aim was to reduce the school’s carbon footprint and thus improve air quality around the school yard.

The 10 schools met for various conferences in County Hall, putting their ideas together on how best to change habits by travelling to school sustainably.

A Travel Policy was compiled and is now in use in all 10 schools. The Green Schools committee at Gaelscoil Phortlaoise informed the school community about changes being made.

Lots of children, parents, teachers and SNAs can now be seen walking, scooting, sharing a lift, parking and striding and taking the bus to school.
