GARDAÍ in Laois are running noise decibel tests, amid complaints about vehicles revving through housing estates and along residential roads late at night.
Equipment that measures noise levels is now in operation, providing proof that could lead to a fine, penalty points and even seizure of the vehicle.
Noise tests were carried out in Portlaoise last night by members of the Laois Roads Policing Unit (RPU). Penalties can be imposed if noise levels are in excess of 99 decibels.
In a loud message on social media today, gardaí said: ‘If you need to wake half a housing estate just to feel noticed, the problem isn’t under the bonnet. It’s behind the wheel.
‘We now have the equipment to deal with this issue. It will be used. Fair warning given.’
In a strongly worded warning on the Garda Síochána Laois Offaly Facebook page, gardaí said: ‘Laois RPU were out in Portlaoise last night carrying out vehicle noise decibel tests, because apparently these days basic consideration for other people now needs measuring equipment.
‘While most drivers pass quietly by and go about their business like decent human beings, a small minority choose to:
*Rev through housing estates
*Crackle and pop for attention
*Wake babies, kids, shift workers and half the street
‘For those inconsiderate drivers, here’s the part you can hear: Over 99 decibels – A fine, penalty points, vehicle may be seized.’
Gardaí added: ‘When a hard-working parent finally gets a child asleep after hours of effort, stories, bottles and bribes and you blast past because you want attention, that absolutely matters.
‘Drive your car. Enjoy it. Just don’t make your hobby everyone else’s problem. Consideration costs nothing. Ignoring the law will cost you.’
