A VAN ‘held together by hope and string’ was seized by gardaí in Laois today.

A rear door was operated by a piece of string, a side door wouldn’t open and not a single panel in the vehicle was undamaged.

A passenger was also arrested at the scene, after it emerged that a live bench warrant was out for his arrest.

The Ford van with a ladder on the roof was impounded and towed away, after an encounter with the Laois Roads Policing Unit (RPU).

The van was stopped by RPU members for not having tax and a certificate of road-worthiness but that was just the beginning.

Posting a series of pictures on social media today, gardaí said: ‘General condition best described as … very tired. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one in this state.’

Under a post titled ‘Held together by hope (and string)’ on the An Garda Síochána Laois Offaly sites, gardaí listed a litany of defects found in the van.

According to the RPU, the vehicle had broken tail lights, not a single panel was without damage, a side door wouldn’t open and a rear door was operated by string instead of a handle.

Gardaí added: ‘During the stop, the passenger was found to be the subject of a live bench warrant and was arrested at the scene. The van has been seized. Court proceedings have commenced.’
