LAOIS Co Council has launched Laois men’s health week, which began yesterday (Monday) until Sunday 21 June.

Men’s health week is an international campaign to raise awareness of preventable health problems, encouraging early detection and to support men and boys in making healthier choices.

Healthy Laois and Laois Community Safety Partnership collaborate with the HSE, Laois PPN, Laois Sports Partnership, Connect Laois, Laois Men’s Sheds, Ballinakill Swimming Pool and Portarlington Community Development Association (PCDA) on men’s health week.

There will be a host of activities for men interested in local events, ranging from kayaking sessions, a summer race league, couch to barbell classes, TRYKA, park run, walks, cycling, swimming and a drop-in café run by the men’s sheds, as well as free health checks run by local pharmacies.

Lads, dads and granddads are invited to participate in the many activities across the county.

Laois Local Community Safety Partnership is pleased to collaborate in men’s health awareness week, recognising the strong link between health, wellbeing and community safety and supporting initiatives that promote water safety, safe cycling and strengthening connections through groups such as men’s sheds and enhance both personal wellbeing and a shared sense of safety across the community.

There is also an Action Man booklet available, which offers simple, realistic and practical tips to improve men’s health. Check it out at ActionMan2023.pdf.

The HSE has an educational webinar on mental health supports, cancer prevention, sun safety and signposting to other health supports such as a ‘Stop Smoking’ service.
