Laois County Council are set to undertake a repainting and renewal of the yellow box road markings at the following junctions on the Mountmellick Road: Newpark, Dunnes Stores, and the Ballyfin Road.

The request was brought to the latest meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District by Independent Cllr Tommy Mulligan, who was urging the urgent renewal of the boxes following significant traffic build-ups along those spots on the Mountmellick Road in recent times.

He received the following response from an official of the Area Office: "The MD office will make arrangements to carry out the box road markings at the following junctions on the Mountmellick Road: Newpark, Dunnes Stores, and the Ballyfin Road.

Cllr Mulligan was thrilled that his motion would be implemented and explained how the renewal would help combat the traffic congestion.

He said: "At present the situation is quite faded and as a result you have motorists driving into those boxes and not stopping and they are delaying the crossings in those areas, so look new markings will hopefully help with the flow of traffic and motorists will keep out of them."

The motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley who laughed at how much the Mountmellick Road had come up during the meeting … but who also used the opportunity to reiterate her call for three roundabouts along the road to improve traffic flow.
