Laois dialysis patients launch unique painting project in local library

Mary Handcock and Pauline McNelis at Portlaoise Library

THE communal environs of Portlaoise library were the setting for the official launch of Through Our Eyes, a unique, creative painting project, which was brought to life by people undergoing dialysis treatment in the community.

Led by tutor and local artist Pauline McNelis, the project was developed through a collaboration of the LOETB community education group, B Braun – which has a renal care centre in Portlaoise – and the Portlaoise dialysis clinic team.

The purpose of the project was to provide those attending dialysis with the opportunity to express their life through painting, allowing them to elucidate their lived experience of treatment in a uniquely personal way In attendance were project partners, healthcare staff, educators and various invited guests. Attendees discussed the journey of the project and the invaluable impact creative engagement can have on patient wellbeing during long-term treatment.

Speaking at the launch, contributors highlighted how the project placed participant voice and experience at its centre, demonstrating the positive impact of creative learning within healthcare settings.

Following the art pieces' 18 December unveilings at Portlaoise library, the Through Our Eyes showcase will, henceforth, be exhibited at the B Braun Wellstone Midlands Renal Care Centre, with an address at Lismard Business Park, Downs, Portlaoise.
