MEMBERS of the Yarn Bombing Mountmellick group have been somewhat quieter than usual over the past two years due to the loss of three of their cherished members Bríd O’Mahony, Anne Blanche and Trish Kelley.

In their memory and honour, the group has decided to take part in the Relay for Life, “just as determined and hopeful as they would have wanted us to be.”

In a post on their Facebook page the group had this to say about their three colleagues: “They were far more than just fellow crafters. They were friends, companions on many yarn-fuelled adventures and irreplaceable members of our team. We are just not the same without them.

“Bríd loved to knit and sing. She’d often do both at the same time. Trish, our resident nurse, often tut tutted at our cake consumption but had the best sense of humour and a quick wit that lit up every meeting. Anne was another gifted knitter whose beautiful creations often adorned her own windows, bringing colour and charm to all who passed by. We miss them all so much. Yet their spirit continues to inspire us.”

The Relay for Life Laois event takes place in Emo Court and Parklands on Saturday 16 August from 1am through to the Candle of Hope ceremony at dusk.

Last year, Yarnbombing Mountmellick raised an incredible €701 for Relay for Life Laois, through the sale of pocket hearts and a wreath raffle. They are hoping to do the same this year with hearts and ribbons for sale, with all proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society.

The group said: “We will walk and celebrate Bríd, Anne and Trish, while supporting those still on their cancer journey.

“Please come along. Whether you buy a heart, a ribbon, walk a lap or simply stand with us, you will be part of something deeply meaningful. Together, we honour our friends, support a vital cause and keep their memory bright.”
