Laois Macra club celebrates 20th anniversary

A great night was enjoyed by the members old and new

DURROW-Abbeyleix Macra club celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday 18 April in Dec's Bar, Durrow. The members marked the occasion with current and past members, along with members from Macra clubs throughout Laois and Leinster. Throughout the night, members looked back on the success of the club over the last 20 years and the many memories people made during their time with the club. Macra provides numerous opportunities to members, including friendships, travel, social outings and many relationships.

Commenting on the night, Durrow-Abbeyleix chairperson Joe Foyle said: ‘‘It is great for Durrow-Abbeyleix Macra club to reach this milestone.

“Everyone had a great night reminiscing happy events down through the years and listening to exciting plans that the club has for the year ahead.” Hailing the enthusiasm of the club’s members, Joe said: “If it was not for the members, we would not have a club.

“Macra provides so many opportunities for members and we want to keep the club going and have a reason to have another occasion in ten years’ time for, hopefully, our 30th anniversary.” Macra is a nationwide rural youth organisation for people between the ages of 17-40 years old. In Laois, there are six clubs, including Rathdowney, Durrow-Abbeyleix, Mountmellick, East Laois, Ard Éireann and Portlaoise.

New members are always welcome at all clubs. Macra loves to see new faces getting involved and are always happy to let people know what the organisation is all about. If anyone is interested in joining, they can check out each club’s social media account on Facebook and Instagram or email laoismacra@gmail.com.
