Laois school's pop-up restaurant is a five-star success

Five star service at the Heywood CS pop-up restaurant
A POP-UP restaurant at Heywood Community School in Ballinakill was a five-star success, as students cooked up a storm for almost 100 guests.
The school canteen was transformed into a gourmand’s paradise for the event, featuring a delicious menu designed by students who not only cooked and served all courses but also did the big clean-up afterwards.
The ‘Heywood Boulevard’ night was the result of a Transition Year (TY) module that culminated in preparing meals for 96 guests in a specially constructed intimate setting, which rivalled many commercial restaurants.
The night gave students a taste of the many demands involved in running a restaurant, as they filled roles ranging from front of house staff to waiters and chefs.
After the memorable gathering, the school congratulated all students and staff involved in what was a very challenging but rewarding learning curve.
The school thanked TY coordinator Ms O’Connor, Lisa from the school canteen, Ms Barry and Ms McDonald from the home economics department and husband and wife team Georgia Dowling and Conor Wafer from Food School, which provides a variety of training courses in the hospitality sector.
Thanks also went to caretakers Seamus, Larry and Bosco, school management and the Castle Arms Hotel in Durrow, which helped out with furniture for the wonderful occasion.
