Stradbally-based Simpson’s Gala has been selected to receive a significant grant through the Gala Greener Grant initiative. The grant was established to support retailers in their transition to more environmentally sustainable technologies.

It encourages shops to adopt technologies such as waste heat recovery systems, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

The initiative is part of a €500,000 sustainability fund, which will be distributed to Gala retailers across Ireland by 2030.

The money received will help Simpson’s Gala reduce energy usage with the installation of a replacement oven and new cold counter.

Gary Desmond, CEO of Gala Retail, said: “At Gala, we understand the vital role that retailers play in their communities and the importance of helping them to adopt sustainable practices.

“Through the Gala Greener Grants scheme, we aim to support our retailers as they invest in the future and contribute to a greener, more sustainable Ireland. Simpson’s is leading the way, and we are excited to see the positive impact that this will make to the store.” The grant is part of Gala Retail’s commitment to sustainability. According to the retailer, the new upgrades are projected to save the store 2,900 kWh of energy annually, which will reduce CO2 emissions by over 9,000 tonnes per year.

Simpson’s Gala is a well-known shop and bakery in Stradbally, Co. Laois. Established in 1998, it is noted for being the first supermarket in the area, and the first to bring an ATM to Stradbally in 2003.

The shop will celebrate 29 years in business next year.
